In follow up to hosting the “Future’s So Bright Experience Day” event for Year 10 High School students across metropolitan Sydney, the Digital Health & Innovation team at Sydney Local Health District welcomed interested students to undertake their Year 10 Work Experience placement within the Digital Health & Innovation department.
Hosting the Experience Day event and accommodating Year 10 student’s Work Experience placement aligns with the District’s Digital Health Strategy to “Foster the next generation of the Digital Health workforce”.
In September we welcomed Kevin Xia, a Year 10 high school student from Northern Beaches Secondary School to undertake his one week Work Experience placement.
Being responsible for Kevin’s placement program, I arranged for Kevin to spend quality time with my peers in Health Informatics, Telehealth, Cloud Computing and Project Management. This also included a session with my fellow HIM colleague Ms Eleni Efthymiou covering topics on: introducing the HIM/Clinical Coding profession, importance of HIM towards digital health and hands on experience navigating the Patient Administration and Clinical Classification system.
Throughout the placement, there were no activities involving terminal digit filing or locating miss filed records, a testament to the versatility of the HIM occupation and the evolving nature of the profession within digital health.
At the conclusion of the placement, I was delighted to hear our time spent with Kevin have elevated his passion for Health and aspired him to pursue a career in Healthcare. We look forward to accommodating more Year 10 high school students in November.
