Our student of the month for March is Renee Lee from Bennett Springs in Western Australia. Renee scored 96% in clinical coding and is due to complete the 22274VIC Certificate IV in Clinical Classification within the next couple of months.

We asked Renee the following questions.

What led you to enrol in our entry level course?

I wanted to gain a qualification to enter the field of Clinical Coding and was referred to HIMAA by a Senior Clinical Coder. HIMAA offered a flexible, part time study online for their Certificate IV in Clinical Classification which suited my current lifestyle. As a mum of two and working part time, I could still manage my schedule to fit in my studies and complete assessments on time.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

What I enjoyed most about the course was learning the anatomy and physiology of the human body, learning how to interpret medical terminology, and applying this new knowledge that I had learnt into my current role as a Ward Clerk. The course was very challenging yet rewarding. Particularly utilising the knowledge I had learnt and applying it to perform clinical coding. All my educators were friendly and supportive. I am very thankful to them for their patience with all the questions I had, it was a pleasurable experience.

Why did you choose clinical coding as a career?

I have worked in various jobs trying to find what suited me best. From retail, real estate to banking and finance. When I had the opportunity to work in the health industry, I realised I had found a career that I enjoyed. My personality suits office administration work, coming across medical terminology, diseases and how they affect the body developed my keen interest to learn more. Clinical coding seemed to be the perfect fit for me as someone who is interested in human biology and wanting a more challenging career within an office environment.
