Our student of the month for November is Kirsty Willaton from Warrnambool in Victoria. Kirtsy scored 89% for clinical coding and has completed the 22274VIC Certificate IV in Clinical Classification.

We asked Kirsty the following questions.

What led you to enrol in our entry level course?

I work at a public hospital in administration and wanted to learn more and advance my career in healthcare however I do not have the stomach for clinical care!  When I learned about Clinical Coding, I was told that HIMAA was the best place to learn.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

I really enjoyed the third cluster where the coding, and medical terminology, was put into practice.  I enjoyed reviewing actual medical records and working through the process of coding.  I found the feedback, communication and support provided by my education officer during this cluster to be outstanding, and it really helped my understanding of coding. For this I am forever grateful.

Why did you choose clinical coding as a career pathway?

I feel I have the attention to detail for this type of process-driven work and consider the KPIs, regular audits and constantness of the role a challenge I will relish.  The Health Information Department is instrumental to an efficiently run hospital and this position provides insight into the department as a whole. This will provide a good foundation if I decide to continue studying to advance my career in this area.  I have also spoken to a number of people who are already in this field and look forward to the flexibility that this position can offer when you are more experienced.
