Limin Chen

Our student of the month for July is Limin Chen from Bundall in Queensland. Limin scored 97% in the clinical coding exam and is due to complete the 22274VIC Certificate IV in Clinical Classification very soon.

We asked Limin the following questions.

What led you to enrol in our entry level course?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I immigrated to Australia from China with my husband and our two children. We chose the Gold Coast as our home. I have been exploring how to restart my career in a foreign country. I was a trained physician back in China. I was pleasantly surprised that clinical coding is potentially a perfect job that could best apply my skillset and experience. The HIMAA online Certificate IV in Clinical Classification is my first step in the right direction.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

The clinical coding module is the main part of Certificate IV. I feel a coder is like a detective, trying to pick out the important yet sometimes detailed clinical information related to the patient’s health encounter, e.g. principal and additional diagnoses and procedures. While reading the clinical record/notes, our brain is working intensively to help us piece the patient’s journey together.

Another joy I experienced was getting to know people and benefit from their expertise and knowledge. To be supported generously and patiently by the Education Officers makes me feel extremely fortunate that no matter where we come from, knowledge connects us.

Why did you choose clinical coding as a career pathway?

I would very much like a career that will enable me to optimise my comprehensive medical training. I also attempt tasks with a methodical and logical approach yet don’t mind playing a supportive role in healthcare organisations. Clinical coding fits the bill perfectly. I am looking forward to the future where I can contribute my share to the world of clinical coding.
