SA Branch Committee Update

Members of the SA Branch Committee attended a very enjoyable Christmas in July Social Dinner. Held at The British, a well-known historical hotel in Northern Adelaide it was a wonderful occasion for members to come together, celebrate and strengthen their bonds. Whilst unexpected illness and work commitments kept some members away, attendees were very pleased that our HIMAA President Catherine Garvey also came along. There’s no doubt Catherine’s schedule is extremely busy so having the opportunity to catch up with her was fantastic.

Social events like these are essential for fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among group members. Everyone had a great time filled with laughter, good food, and memorable moments. Many laughs were had over where to source sea glass and attendees shared their favourite holiday locations. Additionally, another fun topic was winning a lottery and dreaming about what would we do if we suddenly came into a substantial amount of money.

Fun topics aside, Catherine and Terry in their capacity as HIMAA President and SA Branch Convenor, provided some insight on their recent meeting with the Hon. Chris Picton MP, SA Minister for Health and Wellbeing. Catherine updated on the potential support HIMAA could provide on the SA Health Workforce Plan and highlighted the challenges of the current workforce landscape, such as the aging workforce, evolving skillsets due to electronic medical record (EMR) implementation across public facilities and the impacts of the EMR on clinical coding and coders. Overall the discussions led to valuable insights on possible strategies on how to create a more equitable workforce and how SA HIMAA members could help in shaping the future of the HIM and Clinical Coding profession.
