  • October 20, 2023

Introduction

The Clinical Coding Practice Framework outlines good practice for those involved in the clinical coding process. HIMAA and CCSA are conducting a public consultation process to determine if the Framework remains fit for purpose. The consultation addresses issues of current use, content of the Framework and seeks feedback on useful resources that may promote the use of the Framework.

The consultation includes 3 participant questions and 4 core questions (Quick Feedback questions) that only takes 3 minutes to complete, there are also 4 optional questions (Extended Feedback questions) where participants may wish to provide detailed feedback.

We encourage individuals to complete the public consultation via the survey tool. This public consultation has been designed to only collect information applicable to a person’s experience rather than identifying individuals. Please be reminded that when responding to questions with free-text, content should not contain information that may compromise privacy such as identifying specific individuals or organisations.

Responses close 2 November 2023.

Should an organisation want to submit a formal response on behalf of their organisation, please download the questions and email the Word or PDF response to executiveoffice@himaa.org.au.

Background

The Clinical Coding Practice Framework provides guidance on good practice on clinical coding and is referenced in the introduction to the Australian Coding Standards as an expectation to be upheld by all those involved in the clinical coding process.

The Framework is applicable to all Australian health services that undertake clinical coding and covers four main areas:

  • Clinical coding and legal requirements
  • Clinical coding practice
  • Appropriate clinician documentation queries
  • Clinical coding quality and education

Prior to Eleventh Edition of the Australian Coding Standards, this guidance was in an appendix under the title of Standards for Ethical Conduct in Clinical Coding and prior to that labelled the Code of Ethics for Clinical Coders.
