President’s report

Hello Members,

In the past month I have attended both the CDI and ACHSM Asia Pacific Annual Congress which were well patronised. It was great to catch up with many colleagues and friends that have not been seen face-to-face since COVID. The side conversations and incidental encounters are wonderful and is something I have missed during the last couple of years of restrictions. Members have been sharing their excitement and anticipation of attending our National Conference in Adelaide which offers a great opportunity for us to connect and learn again in person. No doubt there will be a lot of fun as well, as is the case with every HIMAA Conference.

New pathway to being a HIM graduate

I’m delighted that in partnership with La Trobe University a Domestic Articulation Agreement has been established. This provides an academic pathway into the undergraduate BHIM degree at La Trobe on completion of HLT50321 Diploma in Clinical Coding offered by HIMAA.  Students will also receive credit in the La Trobe subjects of Medical Terminology and Introduction to Health Classification A. This is a significant milestone as it offers another potential pool of HIMs.

Flattening of HIMAA Membership Structure

As a Not for Profit (NFP) Membership based organisation, it is essential that HIMAA strives to increase membership, broaden influence and advocacy of Health Information Management professionals. Strength in numbers!

The Membership Committee has worked over the last three years to review the current membership structure and work on a solution to ‘flattening’ or simplifying the membership categories. This will be proposed as a Member resolution at the 2022 AGM. The resolution strikes a balance between creating a mechanism for growing the membership base whilst recognising the qualifications and experience of HIMs through HIMAA’s Professional Credentialling.

This is an important step for our Association and profession. I encourage you to carefully consider the resolution and vote accordingly.

Onwards and upwards!
