President’s report

Hello Members,

It got me! Earlier this month, I caught COVID-19 because I had become complacent in wearing a mask in an enclosed area. I now know what all the fuss is about with the congestion and lethargy symptoms still persisting as I enter week four. I’m also hearing many people around me catching COVID-19 or the flu. It’s a reminder for us to be vigilant and to look after our wellbeing. I know hearing from our hospital colleagues it’s a particular challenging time having to juggle the increased workload, sick leave and limited resources during this winter. Hang in there!

The Board meet on Tuesday and workforce shortage in experienced HIMs and CCs was once again a point of discussion. We all know the difficulty in sourcing experienced HIMs and CCs. HIMAA recognises that more needs to be done and feel a burning platform is nearing for us to become a partner of industry, government and educators to solve the problem. There’s no silver bullet, we have made a strategic decision to increase our investment in advocacy that aligns with our Strategic Plan for 2022-2024.

I’m also delighted to see the line-up of speakers for our National Conference in Adelaide. We have secured The Honourable Christopher Picton MP – SA Minister for Health and Wellbeing to open the conference. To my memory I can’t remember the last time we had a health minister open our conference. This is part of our advocacy efforts to uplift HIMAA. Make sure you register. I’m hearing a lot of excitement amongst members wanting to see each other face to face again.

It was great to be able to catch-up with some of the Victorian Branch members last night and to wish Dwayne Richards well in his new role. Jennifer Holland has stepped in as interim convenor.

Onwards and upwards!
