The La Trobe University Academic Board recently approved major developments for its health information management profession-entry degrees, commencing in 2022:

Bachelor of Health Information Management – a new three-year degree.

  • Available from 2022: (i) online from anywhere in Australia; or (ii) face-to-face at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus.
  • Will replace the current undergraduate double-degree (which we will continue to teach to all currently enrolled students throughout the next four years).
  • Option for high performing students to be invited to undertake additional Honours (research) year.
  • Questions: Natasha Prasad, Acting BHIM Course Co-ordinator: Natasha.Prasad@latrobe.edu.au

Master of Health Information Management – continues as a graduate-entry specialist course.

  • Available from 2022: (i) online from anywhere in Australia; or (ii) face-to-face (on-campus).
  • Questions: Jenn Lee, MHIM Course Co-ordinator: j.lee4@latrobe.edu.au

Both courses

The online options will help to redress the Australia-wide workforce shortage of qualified HIMs.

Face-to-face Professional Practice placements are a compulsory requirement in both courses. They will be organised by the University in students’ home states.

Full-time or part-time study available.

International students will undertake the face-to-face option because of Australian Government visa requirements.

The current courses have full external accreditation from HIMAA. The University will apply to HIMAA in late 2021 for an accreditation survey and assessment of the new undergraduate BHIM (online and face-to-face versions), and the online MHIM.
