HIMAAQ is pleased to report that it has regenerated it’s annual mentoring program after lying dormant for fourteen years. In 2021 the program signed ten pairs of mentors and mentees to the program, with students enrolled in their 2nd or 3rd year in the HIM degree at QUT forming the mentee group. The program had more HIM professionals offering to mentor than students and therefore the program was able to perfectly match students with mentors working in their sub-speciality area of interest. It was lovely to bring together the mentor group, some having a good laugh at not having seen each other for close to fifteen years. With formalities out of the way, there were lots of discussions with students about career success to date, the mentors’ experiences when they graduated, and how students may plan their transition into the profession. From here mentors and mentees will be given free time to catch up informally over coffee, with mentees given some structured questions to work through with their mentors.

HIMAAQ is very proud to have relaunched this program. The formalities verified with the group the importance of both formal and informal mentoring to grow the next generation of Health Information Managers. ‘Paying it forward’ is one of the most important things a mentor can do for an emerging health professional. There was some discussion on the night about the importance that HIMAA plays in our profession, growing our community and supporting the longevity of our wonderful profession. This community is what has held us together for decades and will continue to hold us together for future decades. It is a community we must be proud and supportive of. It is a community that many professions do not have.  The mentoring program is an example of how our sense of community can ensure the longevity of Health Information Management for future generations.

An end of program event will be held for the participating mentors and mentees in late November 2021.
