Our student of the month for August is Anna Boon from Oran Park in New South Wales. Cathy scored 92% in the clinical coding exam, has completed the HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding and is keen to start consolidating her clinical coding knowledge.

We spoke with Anna on her experience, read below:

What led you to enrol in the Diploma Course?

As a Registered Nurse, I have always believed accurate, thorough, legible documentation is important in the health-care setting. I think it is very important that the documentation in a patients’ medical record accurately reflects the completeness and complexity of their journey through the health-care system. Pre-COVID, I expressed an interest in completing the Clinical Coding Diploma and working in the role of Clinical Documentation Specialist (CDS) and ultimately as a Clinical Coder. That was put on hold because of COVID. Last year I decided that, after three years of delay due to the pandemic, it was time to commence the course and I also began working two days per week as a CDS.

What you enjoyed most about the course?

I enjoyed extracting and coding data from medical records and obtaining the correct codes. This can be challenging if the documentation is not clear or concise, but it is also very rewarding to achieve the correct codes after working your way through all the information you are presented with.

Why you chose clinical coding as a career pathway?

I pride myself on attention to detail and enjoy taking an analytical/methodical approach to my work. Clinical coding allows me to do this and I find it very satisfying coding a health care record.

Congratulations Anna on your achievement and completion of the Diploma.
