HIMAA Student Profile

Our student of the month for February is Beverly Stewart from Kelso in Queensland. Bev scored 97% in medical terminology and 97% in clinical coding and is due to complete the 22274VIC Certificate IV in Clinical Classification within the next couple of months.

We asked Bev the following questions.

What led you to enrol in our entry level course?

The role of a Clinical Coder has interested me for a number of years, so when the opportunity arose a couple of years ago, I seized the chance to start study.  A friend had undertaken the Certificate IV through HIMAA previously and given positive recommendations about the content and administration of the course. Further discussions with a Clinical Coding supervisor cemented my decision to study in this field.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

I started the course whilst on long-service leave, and due to the fact that I enjoyed the content and challenge of learning new skills, have happily continued through to (near) completion. The medical terminology and practical coding skills were favourite subjects as they support my interest in biology, anatomy and medical procedures. I wish I had learnt the terminology a long time ago, not just for medical purposes, but to assist in increasing knowledge of everyday language.….although friends haven’t really appreciated being told the real meaning behind their diagnosis of ‘presby-something’.

I also enjoy the necessity for accuracy and attention to detail as a Clinical Coder as this suits my personality type.

What are your plans for your career?

I now look forward to completing my Certificate IV and expanding my knowledge and skills through employment within a Clinical Coding department.
