Our student of the month for November is Karen Jenkins from Keperra in Queensland. Karen scored 90% in clinical coding, has completed the 22274VIC Certificate IV in Clinical Classification and is keen to start consolidating her clinical coding knowledge.

We asked Karen the following questions.

What led you to enrol in our entry level course?

My journey into enrolling in the Cert IV in Clinical Classification had been through a clinical perspective initially as I am a Registered Nurse and Midwife with a special interest in Neonates. Until a few years ago I did not even realise that Clinical Coding was a job or that the clinical notes were read, let alone the complicated process of assigning codes and their importance.

Along with my clinical roles, I am now working in a Clinical Documentation Improvement role part time liaising between the clinicians and the coding team to improve the clinical documentation to more accurately reflect the patient’s journey. This role allowed me a glimpse into the ‘coding world’ which made me want to learn and understand more so I thought I would enrol in the Cert IV in Clinical Classification.

What did you enjoy most about the course?

The part of the course I enjoyed the most would definitely be learning the ‘coding part’ in Cluster 3. I was fascinated with the complexity of the rules and enjoyed challenging myself to accurately assign all of the appropriate codes.

What are your plans for your career now that you have graduated?

My future career path, once I have consolidated my coding learning would be one that combines all of my skill sets across clinical, coding and documentation improvement.
