Our student of the month for August is Oleksandr Sidenko from Upper Coomera in Queensland. Oleksandr scored 97.5% in medical terminology and 97% in clinical coding. Oleksandr has completed the 22274VIC Certificate IV in Clinical Classification and is keen to start his career in clinical coding.
We asked Oleksandr the following questions.
Why did you choose clinical coding as a career pathway?
Coming from a medical background I was looking for a profession that was health care related. I had done medical coding before, but it was not as complex as it is in Australia, possibly due to differences in the health care funding systems. I did my research and found that clinical coding was the right career pathway for me.
What led you to enrol in our entry level course?
I wanted to eventually achieve HIMAA Certification in Clinical Coding, so I chose to enrol in the HIMAA Certificate IV in Clinical Coding to start my career.
What did you enjoy most about the course?
I found the study was enjoyable, it was a good pace, there was no pressure with quite a fast response from my Education Officer who provided useful feedback and explanations.
In general, I enjoy clinical coding; to work with medical records is like reading a person’s life history, like a novel written by medical professionals. I know it is not so easy in the workplace, coders are extremely busy with tight timeframes and deadlines for submission, but so far, I am happy that I chose this pathway. I hope I will be successful in finding a clinical coding position.
