Report on HIMAA NSW Branch Professional Development Day at Gosford District Hospital
Wednesday 26 April 2023
Melissa Turnell, Kara Pollard and Kim Osborne, from the NSW Branch Committee, hosted a NSW Branch Seminar in the University of Newcastle Central Coast Clinical School building at Gosford District Hospital.
Kerri McGufficke (HIM), A/Director of Health Information Services, Canberra Health Services, ACT, outlined the implementation of the USA sourced software, Epic. The decision to implement Epic was made in July 2020, and the official “go-live” occurred at 6am on Saturday 12 November 2022. Kerri’s presentation provided significant insight into the governance structure of working groups, committees and reporting lines from July 2020, through the change management, ie “Readiness”, training and application of the DHR Link and MyDHR, and scanning into the system. Kerri’s honesty was invaluable to colleagues from NSW due to NSW Health’s recent decision to purchase Epic for a whole-of-state project.
Kara Pollard, District Health Information Manager, Central Coast Local Health District, reviewed the workflow around the scanning processes and utilised “LEAN” and the “8 Wastes” strategy to reduce expenditure on stationery items and time utilised for stamping pathology results. The aim was “a day in a day” to eliminate waiting time for scanning documents. Quality Control is not performed until preparation and scanning are completed.
Beamtree, Uplift Group and ACA Pacific were Sponsors of the day and were present at information display booths. The Lucky Door Prize was won by a HIM from South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.
The Fun Sessions of the event were two Trivia Quizzes of well-known TV show themes music. There was no prize for the winning table, just many laughs and competitive spirits.
Special mention to the colleagues who drove 3 + HOURS to this event to present and/or attend!
