Zoe Farr, La Trobe Student – Master of Health Information Management

What is your background and what led you to study a Master of Health Information Management? Where do you see the HIM qualification taking you?

I have a background in physics and education but transitioned into the Healthcare sector by studying Clinical Coding though HIMAA and now work at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre as a clinical coder. I have seen the enormous impact the transition to Epic EMR has had on the way healthcare is delivered and the improved accessibility of patient information. I am passionate about utilising the functionality of EMRs to improve clinical documentation to ensure accurate coding as reliable data is the foundation of evidence-based, data-driven decision making in the healthcare sector leading to improved patient outcomes. To progress in this area, I wanted to extend my knowledge of the field by undertaking the HIM qualification at La Trobe University.

What are you enjoying most about the course?

I am loving the broad and varied aspects of Health Information Management; from the hands-on, practical subjects like Informatics where I am building my SQL and database management skills, to the in-depth discussions about bioethical dilemmas in Ethics and Law. I am excited for the future of HIMs with the increasing importance of data and digital health as the healthcare sector continues the transition to EMR. One of the benefits of studying the online HIM course is having the opportunity to meet a variety of professionals from different health services around the country who are also choosing to move into health information management. I know that my studies at Latrobe University are building the skills and connections to enable me to succeed in this field.
