The countdown is on. It is just one month to the 2022 HIMAA National Conference where I am looking forward to having the opportunity to meet with you in-person!
I would like to thank the SA Branch members of the 2022 Conference Committee who have done a wonderful job in arranging the pre-Conference optional events, including a visit to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, and a gin/spirit cruise. They have also secured five Clinical Update sessions where we usually have four in the program. I have named them “Over Achievers”!
The 2022 Conference Program is well-rounded with interesting papers, workshops on the HIM role, Clinical Audit and ICD-11, a panel discussion, keynote speakers and Laugher Yoga. Yes, you read that correctly – I’m quite curious about this session! There is a welcome cocktail party on the first evening and a glam-themed gala dinner with a DJ on the second, so pack your comfortable shoes with your glam dancing outfit. There will be awards and prizes at the closing, as well as our Annual General Meeting breakfast on the second day.
We have a quite a list of exhibitors, so take the opportunity to ask any questions you have at their booths:
- 3M
- Alcidion
- Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)
- Beamtree
- Clinical Documentation Improvement Australia (CDIA)

The Conference Program, and all other details about the Conference, are on our website. If you have not registered yet, I urge you to have another look at the Program and all that the Conference has to offer. Please email our organisers at conference2022@himaa.org.au if you have any questions.
A drum roll please – at the 2022 Conference, we will be launching our new membership software! It is a standardised product which will allow integration of all our membership offerings. After the conference, you will receive a communication to invite you to log into the member portal to check:
- contact details are up to date
- subscription is up to date and current.
Some members who have registered for the 2022 Conference attendance still have not renewed their membership. Please note this will restrict their access to conference apps/registration process on the first day of conference, and your voting rights at the upcoming AGM.
Also, a reminder that abstract submissions for the joint 20th IFHIMA Congress and 40th HIMAA National Conference are now open. Submissions close on 17 October 2022. We have started to see them coming in, which is exciting.
On the behalf of the HIMAA Research Advisory Committee I would like to encourage you to participate in a survey designed to discover your interest and experience in undertaking research, and any barriers to your involvement in these research projects.
Currently, approximately two-thirds of published HIM-related research is undertaken by research teams consisting of health professionals other than HIMs or Clinical Coders (medical, nursing and allied health professionals; non-profession-specific health researchers; health informaticians etc.). HIMs and Clinical Coders are experts within their work domains and are best placed to undertake this research and publish their findings. We want to know the reason for your non-participation.
The survey takes about five minutes and closes on Friday 18 November 2022. Please click the following link for access: Research Interest & Investigator Participation Survey of HIMAA Members.
The State Branches are planning end of year events, including Tasmania on 18 November and Queensland on 9 December 2022. I am planning to attend as many as possible so that I have an opportunity to meet with our members.
I am excited to be seeing you soon. Please feel free to reach out to me to chat.
