President’s Report – May 2024

In the past few years, we have seen the Australian qualification for clinical coding enhanced to Diploma level, the proliferation of access to generative artificial intelligence and a fundamental shift in the workplace use of the acronym ‘WFH.’

On 1 May 2024, HIMAA hosted a Workforce Summit to start a national discussion on clinical coding. We heard from state and territory health departments on the areas they are focusing on to address workforce challenges, the innovations occurring in the private sector and the ongoing need for data generated by clinical coders. At the Summit we saw many familiar faces, and various new ones in the room. Additionally, our virtual attendees support and contributions were a big part of the success of the Summit.

Importantly, the Summit highlighted the crucial and inter-related roles of clinical coding education and auditing, clinical documentation improvement, health data analysis and health information management. It is a keen interest of the HIMAA Board to remove barriers for health information professionals to upskill and satisfy their career interests or respond to the demands of industry.

The HIMAA Board and Board Executive continue to meet regularly while our President takes some time off overseas. As Acting Chair, I am getting reasonably good at wall sits.

Town Hall sessions were implemented in the past few months to keep HIMAA accountable to members. The Town Hall in May saw over 100 members log in to hear what we’re doing to support the profession and offered the opportunity to ask the Board and CEO questions. I’ll let Sallyanne update you on some good news we announced!

We saw the 2024-25 Federal Government Budget released this month. While there will be many opinions on where money is best spent, the budget included over a billion dollars for digital systems in the aged care system. As health information professionals we know how important it is to align the systems we use to support the health workforce deliver high-quality, value-based care – this budget announcement represents an opportunity for health information management professionals.

A quick reminder that the ‘H’ in HIM is health, not hospital – our skillsets are broad and applies to many roles and sectors. If you’re talking to people considering a career direction, let them know that health information professionals are in demand and here to stay.

Welcome to HIMAA Matters, 

National Clinical Coding Workforce Summit and Next Steps

Thanks to everyone who attended the National Clinical Coding Workforce Summit.  We have received very positive feedback on the relevance of what was discussed and the high level of engagement on and following the day.  We have already commenced several next steps following the Summit related to the future of clinical coding. You can read about them in the Clinical Coding Workforce Summit Summary and Next Steps article.

One of the next steps is a panel webinar on 19th June on contract coding.  If this is a topic of interest to you, please join us for an interesting conversation based on the questions raised at the Summit.

Clinical Coding and AI Industry Taskforce

Since last HIMAA Matters, we launched at the Summit and closed on the 22nd of May, expressions of interest from people and organisations who are interested in being a part of developing a national, industry guideline for the development and adoption of AI to the clinical coding process.

We had a fantastic response from 247 people with 117 people interested in being on the taskforce and the remainder wanting to be kept informed and involved in the work of the taskforce.  We received expressions of interest from people working across public and private health services, private insurers, commonwealth government agencies, state health departments, vendors, researchers, academics, educators and consultants from Australia and overseas.  While we need a manageable number of people to lead the work in the Taskforce, we will be leveraging the input from this broad community of interested individuals.  We will be working on logistics during June.

We now have a new area on the HIMAA website to provide information on HIMAA Taskforces.  If you didn’t submit an EOI and would like to be kept informed in relation to the work of this taskforce, please email Kathleen Rogers on himadvisor@himaa.org.au.

The Case for Change Next Steps

In response to your overwhelming support for the challenges facing the health information management profession to be addressed, HIMAA will be taking the lead to ensure the health information management profession innovatively and boldly evolves to meet the needs of the health sector. A challenging and exciting program of work will now commence focused on the elements that define and enable our profession.  In the context of the sector needs, that inform our purpose and require our relevance, these relate to our:

  • Professional identity – who we are
  • Competencies – our skills
  • Practice standards – our practices
  • Education pathways – our education entry
  • Accreditation and credentialing – our assurance
  • Life-long learning – our learning journey
  • Community – our people
  • Impact – our results

A number of key outcomes have been identified for each of these areas and a number of taskforces will be established to progress priority deliverables on this journey of renewal, commencing with our professional identity and our competencies.  Expressions of interest will be communicated when these are ready to be commenced for membership of each taskforce, or to be included in communication and consultation in relation to the taskforce work.

Membership Pricing GraphicWhat a great time to be a member of HIMAA!  It’s not that often that a membership fee is reduced, but that is what we are doing to make HIMAA membership more affordable and to encourage as many people as possible to join and be an active part of the health information management community through HIMAA. Together we are more effective!

From the 1st of June and for the next 12 months, the membership price for new and renewing members for full, senior associate, associate and fellow members will be reduced to $249, new graduates will be $149, concession will be $99, and students meeting the criteria will continue to be free.  Read more about this great membership incentive in the New Membership Price article.

We have also been renovating the HIMAA website related to membership.  I am pleased to announce that the Member Resources area of the website has been completely updated.  Check out what the Member Resources area looks like in this article.  From next Monday 3rd June, refreshed membership details will also be available on the public facing HIMAA website.

As a valued HIMAA member, we want to meet your needs as your professional association.  In June we will be launching a short membership survey. Please take the time to respond and give us your feedback.

New HIMAA Professional Leadership Series

Are you in a managerial or leadership role as a Team Leader, Manager, Director or Senior Director?  Are you in an executive role or aspiring to be an executive? Do you have an intentional plan to guide your leadership development?  Do you have a coach to help coach you in your personal leadership journey?

Commencing in July, HIMAA has partnered with Evolve Health Digital to bring you a series of leadership development opportunities to help you in your leadership journey.  Check out what is on offer in the article with more information coming in June.

Education Services and Diploma of Clinical Coding Update

Just a reminder that we are busy transforming our Education Services offerings with our course intakes currently on hold. However, we will be taking enrolments in the updated HLT50321 Diploma of Clinical Coding on a rolling basis, that is whenever it suits the student, from 1 July.  Expressions of interest can be made to education@himaa.org.au to register interest in our next course intakes. 

If you are an employer or prospective student who would like to pay in advance this financial year, prior to enrolment, please contact us to arrange this at education@himaa.org.au.  Course fees are fully refundable if circumstances change.

New HIMAA Education Services Advisory Committee Opportunity

To ensure our Education Service offerings meet industry needs we are establishing a HIMAA Education Services Advisory Committee.  Expressions of interest in joining the Committee are now open.  Please see Mary-Ellen’s article for more information.

2024 National Health Information Management Conference – 28th-30th October

IHACPA Public Consultation Australian Public Hospital Services 2025-26

The aim of the public consultation process is to seek feedback on the Independent Health and Aged Care Pricing Authority’s approach to classification and pricing model development, as well as improvements to data collection and safety and quality measures.
Feedback gathered will be used to inform the policy decisions in the Pricing Framework for Australian Public Hospital Services 2025–26, which underpins the national efficient price and national efficient cost determinations.

Government Productivity Commission Research into Digital Technology in Healthcare

This month the Australian Government Productivity released a research paper that considers the role digital technology can play in improving patient outcomes and enhancing productivity in healthcare. Drawing on case studies, the paper finds that better integrating digital technology into everyday practice could save more than $5 billion a year and ease pressure on our healthcare system through electronic health and medical records, telehealth, remote care, and artificial intelligence. The research paper identifies that governments can help unlock the savings from digital technology by realising the potential of health information, taking healthcare to the consumer, and harnessing the power of AI.
